The Rochester Police Department just said a sudden and unexpected goodbye to one of its dedicated K9 officers.

If you have pets, you know that despite all the joy they give us, one of the toughest things to go through is eventually having to say goodbye to your beloved friend. And when your four-legged friend is also a trusted co-worker, it can be even tougher.

Rochester Police Department Announces Death of K9 Piper

RPD said that its staff and officers are grieving the sudden loss of K9 Piper:

It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden and unexpected passing of K9 Piper. K9 Piper died May 6 from a congenital heart failure, a condition that was diagnosed just 36 hours earlier.

The post went on to say that K9 Piper was 'more than just a working dog, she was a dedicated partner to her handler and a beloved member of the RPD family,' the post said. The department also noted that 'her presence in our department and community will be deeply missed,' the post noted.

How Rochester Police K9 Teams Help Protect the Community

According to the RPD website, the department's K9 Unit includes eight canines and handlers. The dogs were deployed nearly 400 times for narcotic, explosive, building, and evidence searches in 2024, and are also used to track and apprehend criminals.

The Olmsted-Rochester Law Enforcement K-9 Foundation reports that there are 15 total K9 teams between RPD and the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office. They're made up of dogs including German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and British Labrador Retrievers.

The foundation notes that the dogs and their handlers all go through a vigorous training program that prepares them for police work. Initially, the foundation said, the dogs receive training in obedience, article searches, tracking, agility, and criminal apprehension. Later on, the dogs will receive training in narcotics or explosives detection, depending on the unit’s needs, the foundation noted.
