Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – Tuesday’s confirmed tornado in Rochester was the first in the city in several years.

The National Weather Service says the last confirmed twister in the city was June 17, 2010. It was one of three tornadoes produced by a system of supercell thunderstorms that touched down in SE Minnesota.

The Rochester twister was rated EF-1 and struck around 9:00 PM, creating damage near 50th Ave NW before moving northeast behind the Wal-Mart store. It then skipped across Highway 52 and hit the Menards store before dissipating. The tornado was 150 yards wide and was on the ground for about two miles. According to the NWS, it was the first tornado to hit the Rochester since 1995.

Another tornado touched down north of Blooming Prairie and crossed briefly into Dodge County near Claremont. It was rated an EF0.

The third tornado also formed in Steele County and moved into Dodge County to near Blooming Prairie. It began as an EF-2 but fell to EF-1 strength. It caused roof and tree damage.
