The Salary You Need to Be Considered Rich in Minnesota
Right now, somewhere in Minnesota, there are people casually living a life where checking their bank account just… isn’t a thing.
Could you imagine? No mental math at Target. No “do I really need this?” in the checkout line. Just living your best life with a fully stocked fridge at all times. Ah, what a dream.
So naturally, it got me thinking…What does “rich” actually look like here?

Because Minnesota rich hits a little different. We’re not out here comparing yachts and high rise apartments with a view. We’re comparing lake cabins, pontoon upgrades, and whether our garage has room for all the toys.
In case you missed it, there was a recent article put out about what it takes to be middle class, your household needs to earn between $58,078 and $174,234, but “rich” is a whole different level.
And now we’ve got actual numbers to prove it.
Using U.S. Census data, GOBankingRates looked at income levels across the country to figure out what it takes to land in the top earning brackets in each state.
Before anyone jumps in… no, this doesn’t mean Minnesota is the 13th most expensive state. This is all about income - aka how much you need to make to crack into the top tier here.
Minnesota lands at #13 when it comes to how high that bar is.
To break into the top 20% of earners here, you’d need to make at least $164,585, and from there, it climbs quickly, with that group averaging around $282,691.
And if you’re thinking next level? The top 5% in Minnesota bring in an average of $497,204… meanwhile the top 1% are earning a staggering $671,408.

So yeah… “rich” in Minnesota starts at $164,585. If that’s your tax bracket, you probably already know it.
If it’s not? Same. See you in the Target checkout line doing questionable math.
