Southern Minnesota Teen’s Murder Conviction Upheld

St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Supreme Court has upheld the first-degree murder conviction of a 20-year-old man man serving a sentence of life in prison without parole for killing his own father two years ago.

Jonas Nelson was 18 years old when he shot and killed 47-year-old Richard Nelson in their Le Sueur County home near Montgomery on January 6, 2014.

In appealing his conviction and sentence, Nelson argued the judge in the case made an error when he denied a motion to suppress his confession. The ruling indicates Nelson admitted to investigators at the crime scene that he used a rifle to shoot his father in the chest while the victim was sleeping on the living room floor. He told the investigators he “just snapped” because he was upset about the way his father was treating him.
