Minnesota travelers are losing more nonstop options from MSP Airport, as another airline said it will officially end service to Minnesota. It’s a reminder that even in a hub as busy as Minneapolis-St. Paul, choices can vanish as quickly as takeoff.

.Outside of perhaps death and taxes, there is one other constant in the world: change. And in the complicated world of commercial airlines, it seems that change IS pretty constant, including the new announcement that this airline will soon be ending service to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

MSP Airport Serves Over 160 Nonstop Destinations

the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is the largest airport in the North Star State. So it's no surprise that a LOT of Minnesotans (and Iowans and Wisconsinites and others) head through the TSA checkpoints at MSP each year when traveling across the country and overseas.

It helps that you can fly to A LOT of different places directly from MSP without having to catch a connecting flight elsewhere. In fact, the airport says airlines at MSP served 163 nonstop destinations from the North Star State in 2023, up from 156 destinations in 2023 and 145 destinations in 2022.

Spirit Airlines Announces Exit From Minnesota

Those airlines teamed up to provide a lot of planes either leaving or coming back to Minnesota from those 163 destinations at MSP last year. Overall, MSP saw 324,140 flight operations (both takeoffs and landings) in 2024, up from 323,929 in 2023 and 310,269 in 2022. MSP also averaged 60,644 daily departing seats, up from 56,823 a year ago, an increase of 6.7 percent.

Well, we should say that *15* airlines offer service from MSP, because low cost carrier, Spirit Airlines, just announced that it will be ending all service to MSP later this year. According to the aviation site, Airline Geeks, an internal memo said Spirit will end all flights from MSP as of December 1st, 2025.

Spirit Flights From MSP Will End December 1, 2025

The airline, which said last fall it *wouldn't* be ending service to Minnesota as it filed for bankruptcy, has now changed course as it goes through restructuring to eliminate 40 routes and service to not only MSP but also all flights to Hartford, Connecticut as well.

Currently, the Spirit Airlines website lists flights from MSP to Atlanta, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, Miami, New Orleans, Baltimore/Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Houston, New York/Newark, Philadelphia, and the international destinations of Medellin and San Pedro Sula. But those will all be ending by the end of the year, Spirit said.

Outside of the economics, perhaps another reason Spirit is leaving is that they really didn't understand our way of life here in Minnesota. Keep scrolling to check out some basic things Minnesotans always have to explain to out-of-towners!
