Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Parks Department is about to launch a process that could result in big changes to the city's municipal golf courses.
Members of the board will be presented with four reports that will focus on the Northern Hills, Eastwood, and Hadley Creek golf facilities. A news release says the reports "will contain information on the opportunities and challenges associated with repositioning each course and potential high-level future uses for each course." The Park Board previously received a report on the Soldiers Field Golf Course as part of the discussion of a new Master Plan for the entire Soldiers Field Memorial Park.
Paul Widman, Director of Parks & Recreation shared, “We appreciate having the opportunity to utilize the Park Board meeting to ensure that the members and community are provided information as we move into forthcoming engagement activities. This is the next step in the process requested by the City Council stemming from the National Golf Foundation review and analysis of municipal golf in our community.”
The City Council previously directed the Parks Department to review the golf operations and create a strategy for obtaining more than $700,000 per year in funding for capital improvement projects, operating support, and other expenses needed to "better preserve the value of new investment in an improved system." The Council also asked the Parks Department to look into ways to optimize the golf program by repositioning a course or courses and by identifying so-called high-level future uses for the properties. The department’s review also included developing plans to maintain the existing golf facilities at the current level of funding by identifying service and "user-experience" reductions that would be needed in future years.
The Park Board meeting will be held Tuesday at the Mayo Civic Center in Room 101 from 4:30 to 7 PM. The Park Board is not planning to take any formal action during the meeting.
