The Incredible Amount of Daylight Minnesota Has Already Lost
Our warm temperatures lately may make it seem like it's still summer, but there are some obvious signs that fall is urgently knocking on our door-- including how much earlier the sun is setting in Minnesota these days.
September marks the end of summer here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, both unofficially (when the Labor Day Weekend rolls around and when the kids head back to school) and officially, when the autumnal equinox occurs (which marks the 'official' first day of fall), which happens on Thursday, September 22nd.
Specifically, the according to the Almanac:
The fall equinox arrives on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at 8:04 PM CDST in the Northern Hemisphere. After the autumnal equinox, days become shorter than nights as the sun continues to rise later and nightfall arrives earlier. This ends with the winter solstice, after which days start to grow longer once again.
I don't know about you, but I've sure noticed that old sol has already been setting quite a bit earlier, and how it's been getting darker much earlier these days here in the North Star State. I checked with Time and Date and found out just how much later our sunrises have been occurring and how much earlier our sunsets have been happening, and it confirmed that we've already lost a significant amount of daylight compared to earlier this summer.
In fact, on June 20th in Minnesota, the sun rose at 5:26 am and set again at 9:03 pm-- the latest sunset time of the calendar year. As of Monday, September 19th, though, the sun rose at the much-later 6:56 am and will set much earlier at 7:16 pm.
When you add it all up, we've lost 3 hours and 17 minutes of daylight in just the last three months!
And, if you're keeping score, here's a head's up for Wednesday, September 28th-- that's the date when the sun will set BEFORE 7 pm here in the Bold North (Time and Date says it'll set specifically at 6:58 pm) for the first time since March!
