Wabasha, MN (KROC-AM News) - Voters in a neighboring county will be electing a new sheriff in November.

Wabasha County Sheriff Rodney Bartsh has posted a letter on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page announcing his decision to retire when his current term in office expires early next year. Bartsh indicated it was time "to put a greater emphasis on my family," noting they had often taken a "backseat" to his job.

Bartsh has served as the Wabasha County Sheriff for two decades and has worked in law enforcement in Wabasha County for 34 years.

A portion of the Sheriff's posting read, "I believe I am leaving the Sheriff's Office in a great place with beyond exceptional people. The people that choose to work here are not here for the money as they could find higher-paying jobs close by. I believe it is because they feel value in serving you as I have over the years."

The filing period for candidates seeking to succeed Sheriff Bartsh begins in late May.
