What Percentage of Olmsted County Residents Were Actually Born in Minnesota?

The Star Tribune just published an interesting story asking what percentage of Minnesotans live their entire lives here. They estimate 68 percent of people living in Minnesota were born here.

I've always been curious about stats like these. I remember growing up and listening to my peers complain about how boring my hometown was but when given the chance, those people stayed. The Pew Research Center estimates 37% of Americans never leave their hometown. I couldn't do that. I couldn't go through my life surrounded by the same people, the same buildings, and the same ideas. I had to get out.

Mayo Clinic attracts talented employees from all over the world so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Olmsted County's percentage of "true" Minnesotans is lower than most of the rest of the state. 41% of Olmsted County's residents, including me, were born in other states or countries.
