Which City Has the Most Credit Card Debt in Minnesota?
It's no secret that credit card debt is soaring across the country and here in Minnesota. But only one city in the Land of 10,000 Lakes has more credit card debt than any other.
January and February are often listed as the saddest time of the year here in the North Star State because the holidays are long gone, we're in the middle of winter, and even if we don't have much snow, it's still cold.
It's also that time of year when you're probably getting those credit card bills in the mail (or on your phone) detailing just how much you charged when doing all that holiday shopping. Oh, and, the deadline to file your taxes is coming up too.

Using your credit card to pay for groceries, shopping and other items is something that many of us are doing these days. According to the financial site, The Motley Fool, credit card debt is on the rise:
Credit card debt is the most common type of debt, according to the Federal Reserve. In fact, more than 45% of families indicated they had an outstanding balance due on their cards after making their most recent payment.
This Bankrate story notes that more credit card holders are carrying a balance from month to month, as well. "In November 2023, 49 percent of cardholders fell into this credit card category — up from 39 percent in 2021 and 47 percent in July 2023," Bankrate said.

And now, this Stacker story has determined just which cities have the most credit card debt in all fifty states. So, just which city in the Bold North has the most credit card debt?
That honor (is it an honor?) goes to Prior Lake, Minnesota. The Twin Cities suburb, located in the southwest metro, has an average household credit card debt of $14,436, well above the average U.S. credit card balance $10,263 per household, Stacker said.
Meanwhile, the Gopher State city with the lowest credit card debt would be Owatonna, Minnesota. The city of Owatonna, located about an hour south of the Twin Cities and roughly 45 minutes west of Rochester, has an average household credit card debt of $8,218-- well below the average U.S. credit card balance of $10,263 per household, Stacker noted.
