While the Minnesota Vikings won't be playing in it, this year's Super Bowl could still end up looking very familiar to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

The Super Bowl has become one of the biggest events in the world, right? It's been held every year since 1966, and now features a worldwide audience in the millions. Sports site Sportcal noted that over 62.5 million people worldwide watched last year's Super Bowl XXVIII in Las Vegas!

But the Super Bowl has been rather elusive for Minnesota. Not to rub salt on this wound, but when it comes to appearances in the NFL's championship game, the Vikings are one of the charter members of the 'We Haven't Won A Super Bowl' club. They're one of a dozen teams out of the 32-team NFL roster who have never won the big game. That list includes:

  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Houston Texans
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Tennessee Titans
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Carolina Panthers
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Buffalo Bills

But just because the Vikings aren't in Super Bowl LIX this year, there's a distinct possibility the big game could seem eerily familiar to the Bold North-- because it could feature a repeat of the Super Bowl XXVI, which featured the then-Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills... in a game played here in Minnesota.

That's right, Minnesota has only hosted the NFL's biggest game twice, the most recent being eight years ago during Super Bowl LII, held February 4th, 2018 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

Before that, you have to travel back in time 33 years, to January 26, 1992, when Super Bowl XXVI (that's 26 for the Roman numeral-impaired) took place at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Redskins ended up beating the Bills in that game, 27-24.

And if the Buffalo Bills beat the Kansas City Chiefs in this year's AFC Championship Game and the Washington Commanders beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the NCF Championship Game, we could indeed have a repeat of the Minnesota-hosted 1992 Super Bowl again this year.

That's about all that will be the same, however. Because unlike 1992, Super Bowl LIX isn't being played in here in the Gopher State, it's instead set to take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana-- which has hosted the Super Bowl ten other times.

And, luckily, this year's Super Bowl Halftime Show will feature Kendrick Lamar, instead of Minnesota's Super Bowl XXVI halftime show which was something called 'Winter Magic.' You can check it out below:

It wasn't too long after Minnesota's performance that the NFL modernized its Super Bowl Halftime Shows to feature the modern performers we know today. (Michael Jackson did it the year after Minnesota, btw.) Meanwhile, 'Winter Magic' has become one of the strange facts about Minnesota.
