It was April 1st, 1985. And even though this song was released about three weeks earlier, on March 7th, it jumped to the number one spot on the Billboard music charts on this day, 30 years ago.

Yes, USA For Africa's 'We Are The World,' which was recorded in a late-night session where most of the stars arrived after attending the American Music Awards, originally debuted at #21 on the charts, but after three weeks had jumped to the number one spot. It even features 80's country stars Kenny Rogers and Waylon Jennings.

It was modeled after the European all-star group, Band Aid's song, 'Do They Know It's Christmas,' and ended up raising nearly $100 million, which went to the USA for Africa Foundation and was used for the relief of famine relief in Africa and specifically to 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia.

I remember being in high school at the time and checking out MTV when I got home to see the video. Do you remember this? (And can you name all the stars involved before their name appears on the screen?)
