Seeing as parts of Minnesota are getting walloped today, courtesy of an early-season potent winter storm, I was reminded that Monday, November 10th is also the 39-year anniversary of another storm over northern Minnesota and Wisconsin that ended up claiming the lives of the 29 men aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald when it broke apart and sank in Lake Superior.

Outside of biking the Gitche-Gami State Trail along Minnesota's North Shore or taking the ferry from Ashland, WI to Madeline Island, I've never REALLY been out on Lake Superior-- and certainly not in weather like we're experiencing today, or like they no doubt experienced 39 years ago. Seeing as the tragedy occurred right here, in the upper Midwest, I've always been fascinated by the events of that fateful day. In remembrance of those who lost their lives in the tragedy, here's a tribute to the men of the Edmund Fitgerald, set to the classic Gordon Lightfood song from 1976 detailing the events of the day "...the gales of November came early."
