In addition to our famous 10,000 lakes, Minnesota is also full of tiny towns -- including these nine spots that used to be towns!

Now, while you could call the ghost towns, they're not really haunted. (Well, I guess they COULD be...) But the term 'ghost town' in this instance refers to these tiny towns throughout Minnesota that aren't much more than one or two buildings now, but that, at one time in our state's history, were a bustling area.

In fact, according to OnlyInYourState.com, Minnesota has nine distinct ghost towns that were once very happening places. The story says, "Not all towns were destined for huge populations, and some of the towns that were once bustling still dwindled away. It can be fun to go exploring through Minnesota’s past, if you can take the quiet solitude of these empty, overgrown areas."

They go on to list the nine Minnesota ghost towns that no longer exist today, outside of a few old building or dirt roads. I've actually wondered about some of these, after seeing their names pop up on Google Maps.

How many of these ghost towns have you heard of?

(And note that the number four ghost town, Lewiston, isn't actually referring to the present-day Lewiston, the community east of Rochester along Highway 14. It's actually referring to a now-abandoned establishment Northeast of here, along the Cannon River near Northfield.)
