A new study set out to find out just how many alcoholic beverages the average American drinks, and the results show a pretty big discrepancy in how much we SAY we drink, compared to how much we actually drink.

These results are all courtesy of Blowfish For Hangovers, which is a for-sale product that claims to help prevent hangovers. Their study surveyed 5,249 Americans over the age of 21 who said they consumed alcohol. According to the survey, Americans who drank alcohol said they consumed 277 drinks per year. That doesn't seem like too many. In fact, it's less than an average of one per day.

However, according to alcoholic beverage sales data noted in the study, the actual number of drinks consumed per year is closer to 819! That's an average of about 2.25 per day! The numbers are a little misleading, however, because many of us don't have a lot of drinks during the week, but tend to consume more on the weekend.

Not surprisingly, geography effects how much one drinks. I'm from Wisconsin, which is ranked 7th nationally in the amount its residents drink per year. (Yes, it's hard to believe, but there are 6 other states that actually drink MORE than Wisconsin does.) Meanwhile, here in Minnesota, we're ranked all the way down at #41 when it comes to drinks per year.

Their site has some other interesting figures as well -- like which drink is most popular in each state, how many hangovers each state has, and more. Check it out HERE.
