He's set to take over the helm of the Late Show starting tonight on CBS, but do you remember when Stephen Colbert did a series of TV commercials for GM's 'Mr. Goodwrench'?

According to this Colbert fan site, these commercials are roughly from around 2004, when Colbert, then working as a correspondent for The Daily Show, was hired. The site says, "Around 2004 or so Stephen was featured in a series of ads promoting the now defunct “Mr. Goodwrench” vehicle service program by General Motors.Stephen was brought on board to revive the program’s popularity, with quirky, funny ads..."

I remember seeing those commercials, and remember thinking they are pretty funny. They weren't enough to save Mr. Goodwrench, though, as that program no longer exists. And while I'm guessing there won't be any references to his 'Mr. Goodwrench' stint on tonight's Late Show debut, Colbert's distinct sense of humor will no doubt be the same...
