Seeing as it is another Throwback Thursday, here's a picture of a young Curt St. John, circa 1970 or so, already spinning the hottest tracks from those stacks of wax...

Yes, kids, I'm looking at something called a record player. It's how we used to play music back in the day. Songs were recorded on these big plastic platters (although they were first actually made of wax, waaay back in the day-- even before my time), and you would put them on a turntable and place the arm and needle on the outside of the disc. It would pick up vibrations from the record as it spun around on the turntable, and convert them to sound, which was then amplified through the speakers.

It seems almost archaic by today's standards, but if you're around my age, records and record players were a big part of your life when you were growing up. (Although, I think in the picture, I was more fascinated by the turntable spinning around than I was was by whatever song was playing.)

I've been lucky enough to have been able to be on the radio now for almost 28 years. And yes, I did actually play records on the air at the first station I worked for, back in my hometown of Wausau, WI. But, as you can see, I got my start much earlier than that!
