We've all had at least one teacher who made a real difference in our lives. And during National Teachers Week, now's a great time to thank a teacher.

Growing up, I was lucky in that a had a lot of great teachers, from elementary school, through junior high and high school. I can still remember most of them by name, too. But a couple really stand out. One was Mr. Miller, our band director at D.C. Everest High School in Schofield. He really related well to us students, and had a special way of imparting his excitement for whatever music we were playing that made us really appreciate the lessons, as well.

He also had a good sense of humor, too. I remember once, during a free period that I was spending in the band room, I jokingly asked if he'd write out a hall pass for me, so I could roam the halls and generally cause trouble for my friends who had a class during that hour. He asked me what I wanted it for, and I said, "Screwing around." Sure enough, he wrote out a hall pass, signed it, and in the line that stated what it was for, he wrote, "For screwing around." If I recall, no teachers or hall monitors asked to see my pass that day, but if they had, I wouldn't have shown them anyway-- I had too much respect for Mr. Miller, and wouldn't have wanted to get him into trouble for writing out such a pass.

Who were the teachers that made a difference in your life? You can show your appreciation at thankamericasteachers.com. So, thanks, teachers, for all that you do!
