It's one of just about everybody's favorite foods, and it was invented on this day, back in 1847. Which became a problem for me about 146 years later!

Yes, it's the donut. And even though National Donut Day was actually a few weeks ago on June 3rd, I read this morning that the donut was first invented here on June 22nd, back in 1847. Which makes everyone's favorite pastry 169 years old today.

I have a love/hate relationship with donuts. I hate that I love them so much! When I was a kid, my grandma used to sometimes stop by a local bakery and pick up a dozen donuts that we'd then eat for dessert after Sunday dinner at her house.

When I was just out of college, though, it was the donut HOLES, not the donuts, that caused me some problems. I'd buy one those big plastic containers full of donut holes, thinking I'd eat a few here and there. Wrong.

Often times, I'd head out to the kitchen for a late-night snack, and end up downing the entire container, along with around a half-gallon of chocolate milk. It was bad! I had a real problem.  And, it was probably why I gained about 40 pounds back then.

I've since realized my, uh, problem, and don't buy them anymore. Because they're still trouble if I have them in the house. And to think, it all started on this day, 169 years ago. Hmmm, I might have to stop by Daube's Bakery when I get off the air to celebrate this occasion!
