Some city and town names are uniquely Minnesotan-- like Eyota or Duluth. But others, like our fine city of Rochester, are named for the Rochester in New York. But do you know how many other cities named 'Rochester' are out there?

When I explored the meaning behind how our city got its name last week (you can read the whole story HERE), I discovered that our Rochester is named after the Rochester in New York.

The Rochester in New York, according to THIS article, was named after a Revolutionary War colonel named Nathaniel Rochester. (It was first called 'Rochesterville,' and then eventually shorted to just 'Rochester.')

But did you know there are a TON of other cities named 'Rochester' out there too? That's right. According to THIS list, you can find other cities named 'Rochester' in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Kentucky. Plus, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Missouri. And don't forget Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Oh, and Texas, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin, too.

There are even several cities of Rochester in foreign countries, too. There's a Rochester in Victoria, Australia and a Rochester in Alberta, Canada. And, of course, there are several 'Rochesters' in England, too-- from Rochester, Kent; to Rochester-upon-Medway; to Rochester, Northumberland.

Now THAT is a lot of places named Rochester. (Of course, none are as cool as our Rochester is, though, are they?)
