Just over half of the population of Minnesota is currently married, but what is the average age at which people here in the Gopher State first get married?

According to World Population Review, 51.7 percent of Minnesotans report being married in 2024. That's a very slight (.02%) decrease from 2023, but still well above the national average of 47 percent.

It also puts the Land of 10,000 Lakes on the list of top ten states with the highest marriage rate. Minnesota ranked 7th on the World Population Review list, with Utah topping the list, followed by Idaho and Wyoming.

U.S. STATES WITH THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF MARRIED PEOPLE

  1. Utah
  2. Idaho
  3. Wyoming
  4. Nebraska
  5. Iowa
  6. Kansas
  7. Minnesota
  8. Montana
  9. New Hampshire
  10. North Dakota

But just WHEN do Minnesotans walk down the aisle and say "I do!" for the first time? According to USA Facts and the U.S. Census Bureau, when looking at data from 2021 from across the country, the age is getting older every year:

Both men and women are getting married later in life. In 1973, the median age of first marriage was 22.1 (23.2 for men and 21 for women). In 2021, the national median age of first marriage was about 29.2 years old (30.2 for men and 28.1 for women). This is a 32% increase in the last 48 years.

Marriage rates vary by geographic region, and by specific states, as well. For instance, USA Facts says that folks in Utah tend to get married the earliest, at 25.8 years old. Meanwhile, people in Massachusetts tend to get married later in life, at 31.3 years old, which is just slightly younger than Washington, DC — which has an even higher age-at-first-marriage of 31.95.

But specifically, here in the Bold North, just what is the average age that Minnesotans are getting married for the first time? USA Facts says the average age residents of the North Star State get married for the first time is 29.7 years old.

That's slightly older than Wisconsin's first-married average age of 29.55, and nearly a year and a half older than the average age at which Iowans first get married, which is 28.45 years old.
