The Southeast Minnesota Hiking Trails Everyone Should Experience
If your idea of a hike is the same trail you've walked a hundred times... this is your sign to switch it up.
We spend so much time talking about the North Shore that some of the best hiking in the state gets overlooked. It's easy to forget just how beautiful this part of Minnesota really is. We've got blufftop views, hidden waterfalls, winding forest trails, and scenic overlooks all within a relatively short drive of Rochester.

If you're looking for a new place to explore this summer or fall, these trails should be at the top of your list:

If you want views, this is your place.
The Bluff Side Trail is a fun challenge. You'll tackle wooden staircases, switchbacks, and a pretty good climb, but once you reach the top, you'll understand why people keep coming back. The panoramic views overlooking Lake Pepin are absolutely worth every step.

Located near Hastings and overlooking the St. Croix River, Afton feels like a mini getaway without leaving the state.
The rolling prairie trails, wooded paths, river views, it’s all there. You can hike, horseback ride, backpack camp, or just soak up the scenery. There’s even a swimming beach.
This might be one of the shortest hikes on the list, but it's definitely one of the toughest.
Climbing to the top of this 340-foot bluff will test your legs, but the view of the Mississippi River on one side and the city of Red Wing on the other is absolutely worth it.
It’s short, steep, and satisfying. And you will feel accomplished at the top.
Whitewater is pure nostalgia for me. It was one of my favorite field trip destinations as a kid, and it still holds up.
With more than 2,700 acres near Altura, you’ve got hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, and some of the most beautiful bluff country scenery in the state.

Tucked near Plainview, Carley is quiet, scenic, and perfect if you’re looking to unplug.
The North Branch of the Whitewater River winds through a wooded valley, and in the spring, the bluebells create a carpet of color that people drive from all over to see.

If bluff-top views are your thing, this park overlooking the Mississippi River is a must. Wide-open vistas, dramatic cliffs, and incredible sunsets.
Another challenging one for the avid hikers with nearly 600 steep steps that lead you to incredible river views. It’s short, but intense… and unforgettable.
So tell me… did I miss any that deserve a spot on the list?
