Northfield Says Wastewater Entered Cannon River Tuesday
An Advisory was issued from the City of Northfield, for the public to avoid direct contact with the Cannon River downstream of Northfield, after a broken PVC pipe at the treatment plant sent about 1 million gallons of wastewater into the river.
At 8 pm on Monday, treatment plant staff responded to an alarm and that is when it was determined that a pipe broke in the system. Causing the untreated wastewater to enter the Cannon River from 1 am to 4 am Tuesday.
The staff has been working continually to contain the discharge. The city government has also reached out to jurisdictions in Dakota and Goodhue counties to let them know of the alert to the public.
The treatment plant is currently reported to be in stable to critical condition. Repairs are still in progress. The cause of the breakdown is still in progress. The Minnesota Pollution Control
Agency was notified immediately.
