A young Rochester boy underwent surgery Sunday night at St Mary’s after being severely bitten in the face by a pit bull.

A Police Department spokesman says the 2 year old was at the playground of Elton Hills School around 8 o’clock when the attack occurred.

The spokesman says the boy was throwing gravel into the air and the dog became excited and suddenly attacked the toddler. The boy’s mother and the dog’s owner tried to pull the dog away but were unsuccessful. Some nearby neighbors came to their assistance and the dog was finally brought under control.

The dog has been placed in quarantine.

The boy’s mother is a roommate of the dog’s owner. (From Kim David - KROC-AM News)
