Robot Being Used To Enforce Social Distancing in Singapore Park

Chalk up another thing weird thing in 2020, a park in Singapore is using a Robot to enforce their social distancing guidelines.

The four-legged Robot named Spot, is being used to patrol Bishan-Ang Park in Singapore to remind people to maintain a safe distance from one another. Spot is being used as a test by the National Parks Board (NParks) to help in making sure people are adhering to social distancing guidelines at parks, gardens and nature centers. This is a joint project by NParks and the Smart Nation and Digital Government Group (SNDGG).

According to The Straits Times, Spot is equipped with safety sensors, cameras and will broadcast a recorded message that reminds park visitors to adhere too social distancing guidelines. The cameras are being used to develop video-analytics to report how many people visit the park(s). However, the cameras do not have the ability for facial recognition or will it collect any personal data.

NParks is using Spot as part of a two-week trail that is being used during non peak hours. If the trial proves to be successful, Spot would be used in the morning and during evening peak-hours.
