There are two things Rochester people will defend with their everything:
Mayo Clinic… and the giant corn cob water tower.
And honestly, the corn tower might have the more passionate fan base at this point.

Just in time for 507 Day celebrations, Anna at Hy-Vee on 37th Street created an incredible cake inspired by Rochester’s iconic Ear of Corn Water Tower… and local reactions basically confirm what we already knew:

This city is extremely attached to that giant roadside corn cob.

For outsiders, it probably seems ridiculous. For Rochester locals, the corn tower is basically family.

It became very apparent just how obsessed this city is when rumors started that the nearly 100-year-old landmark could be removed. Locals pushed back hard, and Rochester eventually gave the tower historic landmark status in 2024.

And now it has basically become the unofficial mascot of 507 Day.

If you’re unfamiliar, 507 Day is all about celebrating Rochester, the 507 area code, and all the little things that make this city feel like home.

And a lot is happening around town today to celebrate, including:

  • Art walks downtown
  • Live music
  • Local shopping events
  • Brewery specials
  • Rochester Art Center exhibits
  • Community meals
  • Downtown events and pop-ups throughout the evening

A massive corn cob water tower cake might be the most Rochester thing possible to celebrate it.
