Since the Oprah interview with Meghan and Harry, people are choosing sides; #TeamMeghan or #TeamRoyal...and many aren't going easy on Meghan Markle. Like our guest blogger today.

First, some background.

Following months of speculation and controversy surrounding their exit from the Royal Family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed numerous bombshell details about the Royal Family during their first sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired Sunday night (March 7).

...Prince Harry and Markle decided to set the record straight and address the speculation surrounding their current standing with Harry's family in a tell-all interview. I lived in London in college, I had a poster of Prince Harry in my bedroom growing up, I have a coffee mug that has Prince William and Prince Harry pictures and some basic fast facts on it.

Here’s my take on this whole Meghan and Royal Family thing. First, Meghan admitted that she helped write Finding Freedom, which in my opinion painted Meghan as a perfect angel, completely 100% blameless and innocent in everything. Now nobody’s perfect and I felt the book was very much a whine-fest. It was hard to read.

Harry has been outspoken about mental health issues for many years now. He even stated in an interview at one point a few years before meeting Meghan that he had seen a therapist for his mental health for many years after his mother passed away. He was allowed to seek help for his mental health but Meghan wasn’t? Doubtful and I honestly believe that Harry would have fought for her to receive the same level of help as he got from the Royal family.

Maybe she didn’t let him know how bad it was? Maybe she refused to allow Harry to fight to get her the help she needed in the UK so they had a reason to leave? Either way, something was off to me about the fact that Harry was allowed mental health resources but she was told no.

Next, I understand where the concern about their sons skin color. Archie is the first mixed race child in the Royal family so I wonder if it was more curiosity than an attempt to be racist. My son is mixed. When I was pregnant with him at Mayo the doctor stated to me, “just so you’re aware, biracial babies can be born lighter than your expecting, over the first year.”

I’m not sure if the intent was racist or just to make me aware. I did switch to a midwife for that and a few other reasons but I wasn’t speaking out about the Mayo institution was racist based on one comment made. Also, I’m pretty sure she said initially that Harry told her the comment and then later stated the comment was told directly to her...seems like they’re not getting their story straight.

Having lived in London, I can say that the media there is brutal towards anybody who’s a celebrity. We seem to forget how vicious and cruel the British media was towards Princess Katherine when she was dating Prince William and during their first few years of marriage. She definitely had to prove herself and her worth as a princess to the British public before the media became endeared to her.

Knowing that, did Meghan honestly expect that the media would instantly love her and she wouldn’t have to prove her worth as a worthy and capable partner for the county’s beloved Prince Harry? I’m not sure.

Now, there are a few open cases within the institution about Meghan bullying staff. There’s a reason she went through several staff during the first several months and why many long time Royal staff quit. The bullying claims were being investigated by the institution when Meghan and Harry decided to leave. Kind of ironic on the timing isn’t it?

As far as Archie not being BORN a prince title, according to laws in place anybody besides the immediately heirs to the throne, has to have that title be given by the Queen. I’m about 99% sure the Queen would not have hesitated to make Archie a prince but more than likely, that would be given once he was born and named and not in the press release about Archie’s birth.

Example: William and Harry were both given prince titles because their father Charles is the heir to the throne. William’s kids are all given prince and princess titles because William is the immediate heir to the throne after Charles. Prince George’s kids will be born princes and princesses but Princess Charlotte’s kids and Prince Louis’ kids will not immediately be born with the title of prince and princess. Princess Beatrice was not born with that title, it was given to her by the Queen after she was born.

Only working royals get paid. If Harry and Meghan knew there was a possibility that they would be cut from being working royals after Charles takes the throne, wouldn’t it make sense for them to try to get out before that happens?

Also, Prince Charles has done several interviews in the recent past (pre-COVID) where he stated he wants to limit the number of working royals when he becomes king. I believe he even went as far as to say that it would be limited to direct heirs of the throne, but I can’t remember. Only working royals get paid. If Harry and Meghan knew there was a possibility that they would be cut from being working royals after Charles takes the throne, wouldn’t it make sense for them to try to get out before that happens?

Do I think Harry and Meghan are completely blameless and innocent, that the entire blame is on the Royal Family? No. Do I think the Royal family needs to change the way they do things? Absolutely. Meghan strikes me as someone who seems so insincere and like she just immediately expected to be the most loved princess. Remember, she’s an actress, she can show us whatever we want to see and we could fall for it.

I do love how in love and sincere Harry and Meghan feel in their love and I believe Harry was doing what he needed to do as a good husband and father but doing this, doing an interview that can hurt his family? I don’t think it was his idea and I honestly don’t think he would make the decision to destroy his family.

It was more than likely Meghan and he’s trying to be supportive but it’s possible that he just drove a wedge too far and won’t be able to recover from it in his relationships with his family. Honestly, I think the Royal family needs to change in some ways, but I also think there’s more to Meghan and Harry’s story then they’re sharing.

I don’t know if I can pick team Meghan or pick team Royal right now because I don’t think either is blameless in this. I wish Harry and Meghan the best, and I think they do a lot of great things. I also love the Royal family and think that they will work towards instituting changes as they move to become a more progressive family in this century. I think the Queen has been open to changes in the way things are done (Meghan wasn’t supposed to be invited to Sandringham with the Royal family until after she was married per protocol but the Queen made an exception for her).

They shouldn’t be expected to change 100% if there’s no willingness to change from Meghan and Harry either.

I think the family is recognizing that they need to make changes in order to stay relevant but do they completely forget the way they’ve done things in the past? No. They shouldn’t be expected to change 100% if there’s no willingness to change from Meghan and Harry either.

I wish them all the best and I’m rooting for #TeamMeghan to use this interview as a way to remind the Royal family that it’s time to change. I’m rooting for #TeamRoyal to listen, be willing to change and not let this hurt their relationship with Harry, Meghan, Archie and the new baby girl. Hopefully everybody finds peace from this.

One of the bombshells from the H and M interview was that they were already married when they had the Royal Wedding. How often does a "secret" marriage happen? Probably a lot more than we think. And for celebrities, at least this many times.
